Tulsa's Indigenous truth, Osage land into trust, and Mvskoke cultural educators
VNN Weekly Digest Month November 18-24
Here’s a look at the week’s top stories:
The Morrison matriarch- Mvskoke mastermind or manipulated mother?
(OKLAHOMA) In the early 1900s, northeast Oklahoma was a hotbed of legalized theft of Native American land, oil and mineral rights, and even lives. Local government, state government, legal professionals, business owners. All in on it. And as the pages of some historical records indicate, people would even pit family members against each other to advance their greedy ambitions.
Osage Nation makes history with second largest trust land acquisition in US history
(OSAGE RESERVATION) Assistant Principal Chief RJ Walker remembered the day when he heard the Osage Nation’s application to put their 43,000-acre land into trust was approved.
“I think I was in my office, and I don’t want to say it was hollered about, but it was, ‘Hey, everyone, the fee to trust application has been approved,” Walker said with a smile.
Cultural Learning Classes, helping future generations
(MUSCOGEE RESERVATION) The Native Youth Community Project (NYCP) has been having cultural learning classes supported by grant funding. The class focuses on current and future Mvskoke Cultural Educators.
The first rounds of the curriculum featured apron making, prepping and cooking wild onions, blackberry picking, learning and playing language games and a nature walk. The limited space classes bridged culturally relevant learning with seasonal activities for spring, summer, fall and winter.
