Governor and tribes reach compact agreements
(CHICKASAW NATION) Tribal compacts were finalized between Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt and the Chickasaw Nation and Apache Tribe this month. The agreements follow years of strained relations between the Stitt’s administration and tribal governments, including the Five Civilized Tribes recently declining to participate in the “One Oklahoma Task Force”.
Bill filed to help criminalized survivors of domestic violence in Oklahoma
(OKLAHOMA) Senate Bill 1470, also known as The Oklahoma Survivor’s Act, is set to receive its first reading on February 5. The bill, introduced by Oklahoma Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat (R-Oklahoma City), would permit courts to consider the physical, sexual, and psychological abuse domestic violence survivors have experienced when sentencing for crimes they committed relating to their abuse.
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ receives 10 Oscar nominations
(OSAGE NATION) The Osage Nation and its people have already won. On Jan. 23, actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announced the 96th Academy Award nominations with “Killers of the Flower Moon” receiving 10 nominations. Among the nominees were Lily Gladstone and Scott George, making history as the first Native Americans nominated for an Oscar in their respective categories of Best Actress and Best Original Song.
